THE AUDIENCE
By Peter Morgan

12th to 15th November 2025

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace.

Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses. The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron.

In this innovative, modern play, Peter Morgan breaks through the silence and imagines a series of conversations held behind closed doors. Weaving through time, the Queen meets with each of her Prime Ministers (bar three: Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas Home, and Edward Heath) and her relationship with each of them is revealed, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive - this play gives opportunity for some interesting and challenging roles for several male actors.

While she remains constant, the politicians come and go, revealing intimate and, occasionally, astounding details. The older Queen uses her time also to converse with her younger self, revealing her childhood dislike of the palace and her fears for the future. With frequently changing playing ages and near-constant stage time, the role of Queen Elizabeth II is a tour de force for any actress.
